Ancient Cemetery of Salamis Warriors - Museum of Kapralos - Bouzas Lighthouse
Ancient Cemetery/Graves of Salamis Warriors
The Ancient Cemetery of Salamis Warriors is located in the Livadi area of Aegina. This archaeological site includes ancient graves and tumulus relics, believed to be the burial sites of warriors who fought in the Battle of Salamis in 480 BC. The site offers a glimpse into the island’s rich history and the significant role Aegina played in this pivotal naval battle. The cemetery is an open archaeological site, allowing visitors to explore and reflect on the bravery and sacrifices of these ancient warriors.
Museum of Christos Kapralos
The Christos Kapralos Museum is located in the Plakakia district, about 3 kilometers north of the port of Aegina. The museum, which opened in 1995, showcases the works of Christos Kapralos, one of Greece’s most important modern sculptors. The museum consists of six halls and outdoor areas where visitors can view wooden, stone, and marble sculptures, as well as paintings and terracotta and bronze figurines. Notable exhibits include the plaster cast of the 40-meter-long frieze “The Monument to the Battle of Pindos” and the wooden complex “Parody from the Pediment of Olympia”. The museum is part of the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum since 2006.
Bouzas Lighthouse
The Bouzas Lighthouse, also known as the Lighthouse of Bouza, is a historic maritime beacon located just 2 kilometers from the center of Aegina Town, in the Khloi area. Built in 1881, this 9-meter-high stone lighthouse was declared a monument of modern Greek history in 2020. It played a crucial role in the lighthouse network that facilitated navigation in the Argo-Saronic Gulf during the 19th century. The lighthouse is named after its last keeper, whose father was nicknamed “Bouzas”. Today, it stands as a symbol of the island’s nautical heritage and is a popular spot for romantic walks, especially at sunset or under a starry night
