Aegina City Tour On Foot
Aegina Prison
Aegina Prison (Kapodistrian Orphanage): Established by Ioannis Kapodistrias in 1828-29, this facility initially served as an orphanage for children of the Greek War of Independence. It later included schools and vocational workshops before being converted into a prison in 188, housing political prisoners until its closure in 1974. The site is significant in Greece’s political history.
Markellos Tower
Markellos Tower: This 17th-century historic building in Aegina Town was originally part of Venetian fortifications. Renovated in 1802 by revolutionary leader Spyridon Markellos, it served as his residence and a gathering place for freedom fighters during the Greek War of Independence. Notably, it was the temporary seat of the Greek government from 1826 to 1828. Today, it is home to the Kapodistrian Cultural Center and the Center for Social Reflection “Spiros Alexiou”.
Archaeological Museum
Archaeological Museum of Aegina: Founded in 1828 by Ioannis Kapodistrias, this was the first national museum of Greece. Located near the Kolona archaeological site, it showcases artifacts from the early Bronze Age to the Roman period, including pottery, sculptures, and items from ancient sites like the Temple of Aphaia. Noteworthy exhibits feature the statue of the Sphinx and a reconstruction of the Proto-Helladic “White House”.
Kolona archaeological site and beach
Kolona: An archaeological site near Aegina’s port, Kolona served as the acropolis of Aegina from prehistoric times onward. The site features remains from several historical periods, with the most recognizable feature being a solitary column from the Temple of Apollo. Other remnants include parts of temples, walls, and a military harbor, reflecting the area’s rich historical significance.
