The Temple of Zeus

The Temple of Zeus is an ancient Greek temple dedicated to the ancient god Zeus. Built in the 5th century BCE, it is a significant archaeological site that showcases the architectural style of the period, particularly in the use of Doric columns. Nearby, there are large outdoor cisterns, and an inscribed hydria was found in a second cistern higher up. The temple’s location offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

 Hypapante Church / Shelter

Mount Ellanio, the highest point on Aegina island in Greece, stands at approximately 532 meters (1,745 feet) and features rugged terrain with lush vegetation, including olive groves and pine forests. The Church of Hypapante, located on the slopes of Mount Ellanio in Aegina, is a beautifully maintained small chapel set in a serene natural landscape. Positioned on a scenic plateau with sweeping panoramic views over the Saronic Gulf, it serves as a peaceful stop for hikers ascending toward the summit. The chapel has been modestly extended over the years to accommodate worshippers, especially because its feast day falls in mid‑winter. Inside, visitors will find a clean and welcoming space with recently added soft‑toned frescoes.  Next to the chapel stands a simple stone shelter, traditionally used during the winter feast and by visitors seeking rest. The structure includes benches and a fireplace, reflecting its long-standing role as a gathering place for worshippers, locals, and hikers. The shelter also forms part of local hiking tours, where it is referred to as an improvised shelter created by local hunters—a charming glimpse into the island’s rural traditions. Surrounded by rugged mountain terrain and lush vegetation, the Church of Hypapante is not only a site of religious significance but also a beloved nature destination. Its tranquil atmosphere and spectacular views make it a memorable stop for anyone exploring Aegina’s historic and natural landscapes.
