1. A bit of history

Aegina is the largest island of the Argosaronic Sea and is an important attraction for Greek and foreign
visitors. It is picturesque, with clean seas, famous monasteries, great archaeological sites, a charming
capital and beautiful villages. The island is located in the center of the Saronic Gulf and is surrounded by
Agistri, Methana, Troizina, Poros and the coasts of mainland Attica. It’s geography includes low hills and
plains, while the highest mountain of the island is Mount Ellanio (Oros) with a height of 532 meters. Despite the
lack of rivers, the fauna of the island includes voles, hares, wild rabbits and foxes, while the flora
includes wild olives, holly trees, phrygana and sedges.
Aegina is an important part of the history of ancient Greece. In ancient times, it was a settlement center
for Peloponnesians, Aegeans and Myrmidons. He participated in the institution of Amphictyonia of
Kalauria and in the naval battle of Salamis. During the classical era, it became a member of the Achaean
Commonwealth. In 1828, Aegina was declared the capital of Greece, with Ioannis Kapodistrias as its
first governor.

By Ship:
Aegina is easily accessible by boat from Piraeus. There are daily services and the journey takes about 1 hour by conventional ferry or 40 minutes by speedboat.
